About the Councilwoman

Carolyn Coleman

Councilwoman Carolyn R. Coleman proudly represents Metro Council District 10, one of the most diverse and dynamic districts in Baton Rouge. District 10 encompasses major universities, downtown Baton Rouge, historic neighborhoods, cultural institutions, and communities that continue to face economic challenges. Serving such a broad cross-section of residents requires leadership that listens, understands, and delivers—and that commitment defines Councilwoman Coleman’s work every day.

A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Councilwoman Coleman chose to serve District 10 because it shaped who she is. Growing up in the district exposed her to both opportunity and adversity, teaching her early that strong communities are built when everyone is seen, supported, and given a fair chance to succeed. That perspective continues to guide her approach to public service, grounded in equity, access, and practical solutions.

Now in her second term on the Metro Council, Councilwoman Coleman serves in the legislative branch of city government, where her responsibilities include policy-making, budget oversight, zoning and land use decisions, infrastructure planning, and constituent representation. She is deeply committed to transparency, ethics, and accountability, ensuring residents remain informed and engaged in the decisions that affect their neighborhoods and quality of life.

Councilwoman Coleman brings a collaborative mindset to governance through extensive service on boards, commissions, and task forces that shape Baton Rouge’s future. Her experience includes membership on the Planning Commission, the Complete Streets Committee, the Council on Aging Board, the CATS Board, and advisory roles with cultural and civic institutions such as the Baton Rouge Gallery and the LSU Museum of Art. She has also chaired and served on major project oversight committees focused on downtown development, revitalization, and neighborhood improvement.

An educator by training, Councilwoman Coleman holds a Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology and a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision. Her background in education influences her leadership style—patient, empathetic, and centered on listening. She believes that real progress begins by meeting people where they are and recognizing the potential in every individual. These values guide her advocacy for youth, seniors, families, and underserved residents throughout District 10.

Community service is deeply personal for Councilwoman Coleman. She is especially passionate about programs that support young people and seniors, creating pathways for learning, wellness, and opportunity. Initiatives such as Camp Coleman reflect her belief that investing in children strengthens families and builds a stronger future for the entire district.

Above all, Councilwoman Carolyn R. Coleman is committed to working for every corner of District 10. Through responsive government, thoughtful leadership, and collaboration with residents and partners, she continues to focus on building a district that is connected, inclusive, and positioned to thrive—today and for generations to come.
